I Believe I Can Fly

Something I have realized these past two months is that being confined to one small location with one small set of people for a prolonged period of time is exhausting. I have done nothing but rest, yet I am emotionally exhausted, to the point where I can barely bring myself to open my laptop and write this blog post. Motivation is at an all-time low and everything feels repetitive and boring. Even things I would do for fun, like watch Netflix, have become chore-like. Like many people, for a while, finding new hobbies and trying new things was the way to go. But even that has gotten boring and tedious. I feel trapped almost, and just want to be free and at peace. Completely unbothered and in a state of serenity.

While feeling this way, yesterday I came across a video of a vulture flying through the air on Instagram, and all of a sudden that bird's existence became all I craved. Everything about the video embodied exactly what I wanted: "to be free and at peace. Completely unbothered and in a state of serenity."

And so I decided to choose a poem that encapsulated the feelings I felt while watching that video. A poem that put into words the messages I derived from the latent imagery found in a bird simply flying free.

Flying Free by Alyssa

There is a place I call my own
Where I can stand
By the sea
And look beyond the things I've known
And dream that I
Might be free
Like the birds above the trees
Gliding gently on the breeze
All my life I'd wish I'd be
Without a care and flying free

But life is not a distant sky
without a cloud
Without rain
And I can never hope that I
Can travel on
Without pain
Times goes swiftly on its way
All too soon we've lost today
I cannot wait for skies of blue
Or dream so long that life is through

So life's a song that I must sing
A gift of love
I must share
And when I see the joy it brings
My spirits soar
Through the air

Like that bird up in the sky
Life has taught me how to fly
For now I know what I can be
And now my heart is flying free

Obviously we are not hopeless in the situation we are in, and there are still a lot of things to be thankful for. But I'm sure we can all relate to wanting to fly away from the bounds of Covid-19 and its accompanying quarantine. Hopefully this helps a little bit. And the underlying messages that come from a bird simply soaring through the sky stick with you.
